Like snowflakes, no two bodies are exactly alike – each is unique to each person. Throughout the ages, physical appearances have always been a primary concern for people when presenting themselves to the world. Modern women and men are no different.
For example, during the 1920s, women of all shapes tried to hide their natural curves. Some would even tightly bind their chests with strips of cloth to achieve a boyish look. A short flapper dress hung on an androgynous body was a stark contrast to the tightly-corseted, unhealthy pinched waist of Victorian era women.
Corsets and bound chests are in the past, but basic body shapes haven’t changed. Women are typically described as having hourglass, pear, apple or ruler body shapes. Although there are variations of each body type, the curves of a client’s body, together with their features, determines a women’s general body shape.
When it comes to cellulite and body types, not every body type is created equal. Some body types can have a higher occurrence to cellulite than others. The four body types listed below are listed in order from the most prone to cellulite to the least prone.
1. Hourglass
Hourglass-shaped women have well-proportioned upper and lower bodies with a narrow waist. They are inclined to gain weight all over the body, but particularly in the hip and chest areas.
2. Pear
Pear-shaped women have hips that are slightly wider than the shoulders, small chests and flat stomachs. Most weight gains are below the waist.
3. Apple
Apple-shaped women are larger on the top half of their bodies than the lower half. They usually have slim hips and a large chest and stomach.
4. Ruler
Ruler-shaped women are usually thin without significant differences in the widths of their shoulders, hips and waists. They usually gain weight on their stomachs and rear ends without much change to their arms and legs.
Age, diet and a sedentary lifestyle all have an effect on muscle tone, weight and metabolism – no matter the body shape. All of these factors can cause fat to build up in the body, which isn’t always evenly distributed. This leads to problem areas and cellulite buildup.
A regular exercise program, increased water consumption and a healthy diet will improve the overall health and tone of muscles, but cellulite may remain – particularly on specific problem areas. Even slim (ruler-shaped) women who exercise on a regular basis are affected by cellulite.
Luckily, treatment machines are available today to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Recognizing a women’s body shape helps technicians pinpoint common problem areas related to body shapes that may require more focused cellulite treatments.
